Who can bring family
The dependent visa (家族滞在) is for the spouse and children you support, when your own status is Professor, Artist, Religious Activities, Journalist, Highly Skilled Professional, Business Manager, Legal/Accounting Services, Medical Services, Researcher, Instructor, Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Intra-company Transferee, Nursing Care, Entertainer, Skilled Labor, Specified Skilled Worker (ii), Cultural Activities or Student.
Specified Skilled Worker (i) and technical intern training are not on that list. The family of a permanent resident or a Japanese national comes on a status of its own.
The TB check before entry
People of Vietnam, the Philippines, Nepal and Indonesia who come to live in Japan need a certificate from a designated clinic in their country that they do not have tuberculosis: since 23 June 2025 for the Philippines and Nepal, since 1 September 2025 for Vietnam, and, as planned, for applications filed from 4 January 2027 for Indonesia. Myanmar and China will follow on a date not yet set. Someone who lives in another country, shown by its residence permit, is not covered.
The 3 months
Every certificate issued in Japan must be issued at most 3 months before you file, and every paper in another language goes with a Japanese translation. The COE works for 3 months from its issue: they show it with the visa when they land, by then.
After they arrive
The address notice at the city office within 14 days, health insurance (your employer's for dependants, or the national one), the child allowance, and the permission to work for a spouse who wants a part-time job.
