Visa fees

Japan Visa Renewal Fee Calculator 2026

Since 1 October 2026 a visa renewal or a change of status costs 10,000 to 75,000 yen instead of a flat 6,000, and the period you are granted sets the price. Pick your status to see what each period costs, at the counter and online.

How you apply
Application received

A change to another status costs the same as a renewal. You pay when permission is granted.

Your renewal or change costs

¥10,000 – ¥75,000

The longest period, 5 years, costs ¥75,000: ¥15,000 a year.

Online the longest period costs ¥65,000, ¥10,000 less.

Before 1 October 2026 every period cost ¥6,000.

Period grantedFeePer year5 years of stay
5 years¥75,000¥15,000¥75,000 (×1)
3 years¥64,000¥21,333¥128,000 (×2)
1 year¥33,000¥33,000¥165,000 (×5)
3 months¥10,000¥40,000¥200,000 (×20)

The last column adds up the renewals for five years of stay if you are granted the same period every time, at today's fees.

You pay with revenue stamps (収入印紙) when you collect your card; the postcard from the office gives the amount. Stamps are sold for cash only and the shops at the offices often run out, so buy them at a large post office beforehand.

What changed on 1 October 2026

Extending a period of stay (在留期間更新) and changing status (在留資格変更) used to cost a flat ¥6,000 at the counter and ¥5,500 online. From 1 October 2026 the fee follows the period granted, from ¥10,000 for 3 months or less to ¥75,000 for 5 years or more (Article 25(1) of the revised Immigration Control Act Enforcement Order). Permanent residency went from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000.

The day the office received your application decides. Applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the old fee, even when permission comes on or after 1 October.

How and when you pay

Nothing is paid when you apply. At the counter you pay with revenue stamps when permission is granted, for the amount on the postcard the office sends. Stamps can only be bought with cash.

Online you pay after the review by convenience store or bank payment (internet banking works), from a separate e-mail with the payment link sent to the address you registered, whether the card is posted to you or collected. A transaction fee comes on top.

What the review looks at

The agency's guideline for renewals and changes of status (revised June 2026) lists eight points: the activity fits the status; the landing standards are met where they apply; you did the activity of your current status; good conduct; enough assets or skills to support yourself; proper pay and working conditions; taxes and other dues paid; and the notifications the Immigration Control Act requires made.

A reduced fee

If you are in financial hardship comparable to people who need public assistance (生活保護) and need humanitarian consideration, the fee for a renewal or change can be cut to ¥10,000, at the counter only. The agency's guidelines on fee reduction list the cases.

Permanent residency

Permission for permanent residency costs ¥200,000 for applications received from 1 October 2026 (it was ¥10,000), applied for at the counter and paid when it is granted.
