Your papers, on time

Residence Card and My Number Card: Your Renewal Calendar (2026)

Your residence card, My Number card, its electronic certificate and your passport end on different days, and renewing one does not renew the others. Enter the dates printed on your cards once: you get every step with its first and last day, where to go and what to say there, and reminders in your phone's calendar.

Your residence status

Printed on the front of your residence card.

Leave it empty until you apply. When the new card comes, enter its new end date above and clear this.

My Number card

Printed on the front of the card. With a period of stay it is usually the same day as your period ends.

Written on the 電子証明書の写し paper you got with the card. Not sure? Work it out:

Renew your period of stay, from 30 October 2026

  • Nobody will post you a reminder: J-LIS sends its expiry letters only to foreign residents without a period of stay. This calendar is your reminder.

New residence card: change the My Number card's date

The My Number card does not follow your new period by itself. Take the new residence card and the My Number card to the city hall before 30 January 2027. After that day the card lapses, and a new one costs ¥1,000 with its certificate.

New residence card: show it to your bank

Banks keep your period of stay on file. One bank's notice (Hokkaido Shinkin Bank) says it may restrict some transactions if it is not told by the end of the period on file. Ask your own bank what it needs.

Why these dates go wrong

The residence card, the My Number card and its electronic certificate end on days that depend on each other, and no office updates the others for you. A renewal at immigration leaves the My Number card on the old date. A renewal still pending runs past the date printed on the card. A move voids the My Number card after 14 days. People find out at a convenience store printer or a bank counter, and a lapsed card costs a fee to replace.

If your status has a period of stay, J-LIS posts no expiry letter for your My Number card or its certificate, so the only reminder is the one you set yourself.

The special period while a renewal is pending

A renewal filed by the last day of your period of stay lets you stay on your status, and keep working as before, until the decision or the end of the day two months after the period ended, whichever comes first. A period ending on 25 January lets you stay until 25 March at the latest. Applications are accepted from three months before the end (for periods of six months or more).

The My Number card of a foreign resident

With a period of stay, the My Number card ends on that period's last day. Renewing at immigration does not change it: while the renewal is pending, the city hall extends the card by two months on proof that you applied; with the new residence card, it moves the card to the new date. Do it before the date on the card. Afterwards the card has lapsed and a new one costs ¥800 plus ¥200 for the certificate.

The card itself lasts until the tenth birthday after it was issued (the fifth if you were under 18), never longer than your period of stay. Its electronic certificate lasts until the fifth birthday after it was issued. Both renew free from the day after the date three months before they end: for 25 April, from 26 January.

The one card (特定在留カード) since 14 June 2026

Since 14 June 2026 a residence card can also be your My Number card. It is optional: two cards still work. With one card the city hall visit after a renewal goes away, but you must ask for the one card again at every renewal, at the counter (not online), and it comes about ten days later. Its My Number part still ends with your current period, so a renewal not decided by then needs the city hall to change that date.

Permanent residents' and HSP (ii) cards issued from 14 June 2026 last until the tenth birthday after issue (the fifth under 18), instead of seven years. Older cards keep their date. Either way, the card is renewed from three months before it ends, free.

Moving within Japan

Within 14 days of the move, file the moving-in notice at the new city hall with your residence card: it is your address notice to immigration too. Bring the My Number card the same day for its continued use. A notice filed more than 14 days after the move voids the card, and the card also lapses 90 days after the move if it was never brought in. The signing certificate on it ends with the move and can be issued again there.
